WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION: EATING TIME-OUT

Overeating is similar to a drug addiction, with food as the drug. All overweight individuals chronically overeat- day and night, 365 days a year, not just at Thanksgiving, birthdays, or other special events. Overeating becomes a compulsive behavior pattern and for many the centerpiece of their lives. Overweight Americans eat when they are happy, celebrating, sad, crying, in front of the television, at sporting events, standing up, sitting down, walking down the street, in a car, at an airport, in a social setting, in a private setting, during the holidays, before and after the holidays, on weekends and weekdays. Did I miss anything? As a society, we have become accustomed to eating, and then overeating, whether or not we are truly hungry or in need of food. Take a look at the following:

  • Kelly Brownell, a psychologist at Yale University who studies behavior and obesity, states, "The number of opportunities to eat has risen dramatically. Food- usually junk food- is everywhere, in places people never thought one should eat- drugstores, gas stations, shopping malls and in institutions like schools."
  • Restaurants and stores are competing for what the industry calls "share of stomach."
  • The food industry currently produces 3,800 calories a day per person, far more than any man, woman, or child would need. Sure, some of those unneeded calories go to waste, but some do end up on our waist.
  • In surveys where participants probably underestimate actual caloric intake, researchers have found that men, on average, consumed 216 more calories a day in the mid-1990s than they did in the late 1970s. For women, it was 112 additional calories per day. For the record, that equates to:

For men

216 extra calories x 365 days in a year = 78,840 extra calories a year

or

78,840 extra calories + 3,500 calories (1 pound) = 22.5 pounds of weight gain a year!

For women

11 2 extra calories x 365 days in a year = 40,880 extra calories a year

or

40,880 extra calories + 3,500 calories (1 pound) = 11.6 pounds of weight gain a year!

Consider this statistic for just one moment. For men, 216 additional calories a day equals 22.5 pounds of weight gain a year. For women, 112 additional calories a day equals more than 11.5 pounds of weight gain a year. This is for one ó earl

Consider the cumulative effect of this after three, four, or five years and realize that in the future the number of opportunities to consume food throughout the day will undoubtedly increase just as dramatically as calorie consumption has. Why? If you continue to consume more calories, the food companies will continue to make the food more available. The situation will continue to spiral out of control.
